Summer 2017

Summer is just about here and we’re so excited about our Build a Better World Summer Reading Program. Sign up for the reading program starting June 12 and check out our summer events below.  We hope to see you in the YA Room!

 

SUMMER KICKOFF EVENT
Thursday, June 29, 7 PMbuildbetter

Put your construction hat on and join us for our summer reading kick-off event.  Work in teams and compete to build the best structure out of recycled materials.  Prizes and refreshments will be given out.  Sign up June 12.

Introduction to Coding
Mondays @ 7pm
High school students will introduce students in grades 6-10 to the Java programming language. Students should bring a flash drive to store their files. The first session will be on Monday, July 10th. Sign up June 29.

Monday, August 21
Solar Eclipse Viewing
Join us to witness the sun disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilight. Refreshments will be served. Time to be determined.

SEARCH FOR THE SUMMER MASCOTS
Search the library for our YA summer mascots, Hard Hat Harry and Super Builder Sally. They will be hidden somewhere different each week. Fill out a raffle ticket telling us where you found them and be entered into a weekly drawing.

MOVING UP DAY…TO THE YOUNG ADULT DEPARTMENT
On THURSDAY, JUNE 22, after your moving up ceremony from Elementary School to Middle School, visit the Library because you are now a Young Adult. Bring mom and dad to get your new adult library card. Explore the Young Adult Room, sign up for the Summer Reading Program, and take a photo in our YA photobooth. This special day for new sixth graders is from 2:00 to 8:00 pm.

 

SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The theme of our Summer Reading Program is “Build a Better World”. Young adults entering grades 6-12 are invited to sign up starting June 12 in the YA Room. Participants will log their reading online and pick up prizes in person when they reach certain milestones. Pick up our summer activities booklet for our complete summer schedule.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Young photographers ages 15-18 living in the East Meadow School District can pick up an application for our annual photography contest in the YA Room.  Applicants can submit up to two photographs in either color or black & white. Special prizes will be awarded for photographs depicting the theme “The East Meadow Community”. All photographs must be submitted to the Young Adult Department by Friday, April 21.  Prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony on Thursday, May 18, at 7 pm

September/October YA Events

As we get ready to return to school,  mark the dates for our upcoming events in YA. Our database refresher class will prepare you for a great school year. High school students can take a free practice SAT/ACT exam to prepare for the real thing, and parents and students are invited to our “Countdown to College” seminar to learn about the application and admissions process.

As always, we have fun crafts and food programs to get you in the mood for Halloween and the fun fall season.

Barbara Becker, M.A., M.S.,NYS licensed high school guidance counselor and educator will spell out what courses to take (a lot of AP’s vs Honors vs regular level), and a myriad of other invaluable advice so you correctly schedule the many important steps to acceptance at your first-choice college. This process must start in ninth grade and follow through every year, including summers, until that acceptance letter arrives in your mailbox in twelfth grade. Sign up October 6.
